According to a May 2007 report by the Mortgage Asset Research Institute (MARI), while showing improvement, Georgia had the fourth worst mortgage fraud problem in the country for loans originated in 2006.
Georgia Real Estate Fraud Prevention and Awareness Coalition, Inc. (GREFPAC) has released two advisories as part of its continuing effort to assist in the fight against mortgage fraud in Georgia.
GREFPAC developed the mortgage fraud advisories to provide information on the Georgia Residential Mortgage Fraud Act and to compliment the notice relating to federal law which the FBI and Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) to jointly released in March 2007. "Unlike most other states, Georgia has a law which specifically criminalizes mortgage fraud," said GREFPAC President, Matt Wade. "We want every borrower, every seller and every other person who touches a Georgia residential mortgage transaction to know that."
GREFPAC encourages all sectors of the Georgia mortgage and real estate industries to integrate one of the notices into their processes. For instance, lenders and real estate brokerages may wish to add signature lines to one of the advisories and make it part of their standard documents. Closing attorneys may also wish to prominently display one of the advisories in their lobbies.
Permission is granted to view, store, print, reproduce and distribute the documents listed below provided that (1) they are not modified in any way except to include signature fields and (2) no viewer, storer, printer, reproducer or distributor may charge another party any fee to access, view, store, print, reproduce or distribute them or any fee in any way related to its preparation or permitted modification.
